When: Bonnia-Olenellus trilobite zone, Forteau Formation, Dyeran (515.3 - 511.2 Ma)

• The formation encompasses two series: lower series - begins stratigraphically only a few meters above the top of the underlying Bradore Sandstone; upper - biostromal series with less pronounced ""reef"" characteristics that occur and seperated from lower series by about 20m of interbedded siltstones, shales and sandstones. AGE: Waucoban; refined by A. Hendy (6/2009) on the basis of biostratigraphic data (= Bonnia-Olenellus zone). Further refined to Dyeran (PJW).

Environment/lithology: reef, buildup or bioherm; lithified, burrowed, shelly/skeletal wackestone

• finely laminated biomicrite-sparite with some minor terrigenous admixture containing macrofossil sements/fragments, interlayed with cement.

• SOme of the skeletons may have been derived as washed-in material from the outside; they may be sheletons that were attatched by fleshy tissue,, but whose attatchments rotted and the skeletons fell to the sediment; they may have been soft-bodied with hard parts, and attatched within the cavities, but whose bodies rotted, thereby depositing the skeletal debris on the cavity floor (e.g. sponges and their spicules); or, of course, some of the skeletal debris may represent organisms which actually lived in the sediments.
